Google Local Search Now Finds Where You Are

For travelers, mobile applications that allow you to search for local places can be a pain to deal with. You constantly have to go back into the app to update your location. Sometimes it's easy to forget to do this, which can make your local search process become tedious and frustrating. Today, Google has announced their way of making local search a lot easier. Google's Local search homepage will now feature a new technology known as "My Location".
Simplifying Local Search
Available exclusively on Windows Mobile devices, Google makes good use of its Gears Geolocation API to get an approximate ID on where you're located. The API uses the same Cell ID technology Google uses for Google Maps on mobile devices. How does this affect your local search results? With My Location, users only have to type in whatever they're searching for without adding a location in. Whether it's sushi, the weather, or a local restaurant, Google will find both your results and your location. The API does most of the heavy work and cuts down on the amount of time spent typing in all of that information. We think this beats having to change your location every time you travel to another city or state.

iPhones Continue to Hammer Networks

iPhone use in the epicenter of the technology world is on the rise, according to research released by Meraki Thursday.
According to the company, which is creating Free the Net, a free wireless network in San Francisco, it has witnessed a significant uptick in iPhone usage as it continues to roll out its service. Of the 150,000 devices that have used Free the Net, the iPhone accounts for nearly 20 percent. At its lowest point months ago, the iPhone accounted for just 6 percent of all the devices connecting the network.

RIM Turns to Microsoft For Search

Microsoft and RIM announced today that they have struck a deal that will see all BlackBerry smartphones running Microsoft Live Search.
The deal’s specifics weren’t released, but Microsoft’s ability to bring Live Search to the BlackBerry is a major development in the mobile space and is a direct challenge to Google, which is currently providing the iPhone with its search and will feature Google Search in upcoming Android-based devices.

Photosynth: View and Create 3D Panoramas

Recently Microsoft released the final version of its long-in-beta web app called Photosynth.
Photosynth gives users the ability to view and create 3D Panoramas and virtual tours. Basically it takes a collection of regular photographs and reconstructs the scene or object in a 3-D environment.
Photosynth is potent mixture of two independent breakthroughs: the ability to reconstruct the scene or object from a bunch of flat photographs, and the technology to bring that experience to virtually anyone over the Internet.
The Photosynth viewer allows user to zoom in/out, view in 3D/2D and circle through next and previous frames. Below you can see some screenshots of 3D panoramas of Taj Mahal, Smith Tower and the Sphinx.

"Facebook Helped Me Win," Claims Politician

In Tampa, Florida, one of the cities that comprises the megalopolis known as the Tampa Bay area, home to Busch Gardens, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and only minutes from beautiful beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida (oh, and this author's stomping grounds, too), a local politician is giving credit to Facebook for his recent win in the primaries for the local County Commission.
On Facebook, the crowd is still very young, with an average age of 22.96 as of this February. Typically, the youth vote, although coveted, could not be counted on thanks to low turnout of young voters at the polls. However, this small time local election may prove to be one of the first examples of the huge impact Gen Y can have on the political process.
Now that many members of Gen Y are of voting age, their sheer numbers can no longer be ignored by politicians. The biggest generation since the baby boomers, Gen Y has been poorly characterized by some as lazy, unfocused, and self-centered - a generation that would just as soon stay home with mom and dad than go out and climb the corporate ladder. While it may be true that Gen Y has the good financial sense to maximize their time in rent-free accommodations, they are certainly proving themselves the opposite of lazy when it comes to involvement, be it social involvement, community involvement, or political involvement. Considering this recent "Facebook-powered" win, it could be that this generation is all talk and all action, too.
According to Rearden Killion Communications, the St. Petersburg advertising firm that handled the campaign of Kevin Beckner in the District Six democratic primary for the Hillsborough County Commission, the Facebook effort comprised of content, video production, and media buying valued at around $7000. There was also a Facebook app which let supporters put a campaign button on their own pages and provided a link to Beckner's page. The overall effort increased Beckner's Facebook group membership by 50 percent.

YouTube To Squeeze More Money Out of Homepage

You’ll notice very few ad units while surfing YouTube, and none at all while watching videos contributed by ordinary folk like you or me. The reason? Google fears the legal repercussions of monetizing user generated content that may infringe on somebody else’s copyright.
But YouTube’s homepage is different since it merely displays thumbnails that may lead to infringing content. And it has capitalized on that page by selling a video ad unit in the upper right-hand corner for $175,000 per day (plus a commitment to buy $50,000 more in advertising elsewhere on YouTube or Google).

Copy and Paste for iPhone
We iPhone users know exactly how difficult it is for us to survive without having copy and paste functionality. Apple does have this under consideration but according to them its not a priority.
Perhaps with the new open-source community project called OpenClip, it will be possible for users to use copy and paste functionality among some iPhone apps without begging Apple to add this feature to the firmware.
This is how it works, when a developer adds the OpenClip framework to an iPhone app, that app gains copy and paste functionality. So basically it all comes down to how willing and supportive the iPhone app developers are. GeekBrief has also made a video demo of the copy/paste functionality being used within some native iPhone apps.

Palm Treo Pro is now Official

As of today, the Palm Treo Pro is now official.
Rumors hit the Internet two weeks ago when leaked pictures of the Palm Treo Pro started surfacing around forums and though not an iPhone-Killer, this new phone is definitely a big match for all the PocketPC devices currently available in the market.

The Palm Treo Pro sports a 2.5 inches TFT touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels. It is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 and has all features of a standard phone such as Bluetooth, Infrared port, USB, WiFi, MicroSD slot etc and most surprisingly a built-in GPS. A 2 Megapixel camera is also there to add more to the disappointment.

Ebay Survey Says Americans Buy Crap They Don’t Want

.90% of Americans have at least one unused item lying around the house
.Unused electronics items can be found in more than 2/3 of households (70%)
.38% of men are holding onto old electronics, compared to 35% of women

Pageonce's New iPhone App: Now 100% Mobile and Self-Destructs When Stolen

When Pageonce unveiled their first version of their iOnce iPhone app, it became an instant success. Within 10 days it was ranked in the top three applications in the Productivity category, and overall it was ranked in the top 50 out of all the free iPhone applications. What made this app so appealing? Simple: it's a one-stop-shop for managing all of your online accounts - finance, utilities, travel, shopping, email, and social networks. Now, the latest version of the app, iOnce 2.0, has arrived and it's even better. The new app offers improved security features that users have been clamoring for as well as the ability to add accounts directly from the app itself.
Lost Your iPhone? Nuke Your Personal Data
With the new version of iOnce, the app has received a security enhancement called the "mobile destruct feature." With this, you can instantly delete all your account information off your iPhone or iPod Touch if your device is ever lost or stolen. Also, you are now able to register you device by serial number which allows that device - and that device alone - the ability to access your Pageonce account data.

Delta Outfitting Entire Domestic Fleet With Aircell’s GoGo In-Flight Wi-Fi Service by End of 2009

It’s the dawning of a new age, folks. In-flight Wi-Fi is slowly rolling out across domestic airlines in the US and Delta is looking to capitalize on it by outfitting their entire domestic fleet of aircrafts with Aircell’s GoGo service.
The first half of 2009 will see 133 of Delta’s MD88/90 airplanes equipped with the service with another 200 Boeing 737, 757 and 767-300s to follow suit. Delta hopes to have more than 330 airplanes equipped to provide the Wi-Fi service by the end of 2009 making it the only major US airline to offer the service across its entire domestic fleet.
GoGo will cost Delta flyers $9.95 on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 for flights that are longer than three hours.

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Mockup Designs

Ubuntu Linux fans have their hopes high for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex as it will feature a complete new user interface and a stylish new brownish-black theme which we have already witnessed in some of the screenshots for the Alpha build.
Canonical is planning to surpass Mac OS X in the next coming two years but without a revolutionary change in the Ubuntu GUI it is close to impossible. Will has made a good attempt by designing some of the best mockups of Intrepid Ibex ever and with such a design, Ubuntu can easily take over Mac OS X soon enough.

Microsoft Relaunches Windowslive.com as a Community Site
Until now, Microsoft had used WindowsLive.com as the main hub for getting information about its Live branded services like Messenger, Hotmail, Spaces, SkyDrive, and Photo Gallery. Today, Microsoft has re-launched the site as a community site, where users can exchange information and ideas about how to best use these tools. As Marty Collins, the Windows Live senior marketing manager explained to us in an interview last week, the idea behind this redesign is to better explain to users how they can use these services together, as well as fostering an active user community.

Google Knol is now Open to Everyone

Google Knol, the Wikipedia-like service that was released in its first alpha phase in December last year is now available to everyone.
Though the key concept of both Google Knol and Wikipedia is same but both services focus on different aspects of open-source knowledge sharing and in no way Google Knol can be tagged as a Wikipedia Killer.
In Google Knols, authors can write on any article known as a Knol and each Knol is associated with an author which describes only their views and opinion so of course there can be multiple Knols on a particular subject.

AOL Makes Big Budget Cuts Across Blogs (Updated)

AOL is making across the board budget cuts on its blogging properties, we’re hearing from multiple sources. One area that seems to be immune from the cuts: The Tech Network (including Engadget), which continues to grow like a weed and drives substantial revenue.

Upgrade to Firefox 3.0.1 for more Security and Stability

Last month a very serious vulnerability was discovered in the Firefox source code which affected both Firefox 3 and Firefox 2.x.x and could allow a hacker to execute commands remotely on a machine. Hopefully this new update will fix this Firefox security hole too.

Firefox 3.0.1 fixes a lot of bugs and security issues that spawned through the initial release of Firefox 3.0. A complete list of all such security issues can be found Here.
As it is the first update since Firefox 3, so it is recommended for users to upgrade to Firefox 3.0.1 immediately.

Apple's App Store Launches

As the hype around the iPhone 3G launch tomorrow is kicking into high gear, Apple has released a new version of iTunes, which includes the long-awaited App Store. According to Pinch Media, there are currently 552 applications available in the store. More than 25% of the apps are available for free. Applications from the App Store will run on both the iPhone and iPhone touch after users upgrade to the latest firmware, which will also be released today.
As the new iPhone's hardware doesn't feature as many major technological or design breakthroughs as first iPhone did, a lot of attention has shifted towards the applications that can now run natively on the phone thanks to the firmware upgrade. Currently, according to Pinch Media, the most expensive app in the catalog costs $69.99, but, besides the free apps, the most common price points are $0.99, $4.99, and $9.99.

Some of the most interesting applications for the phone are the location-aware apps like Loopt. While there have always been location-aware applications for other phones with GPS capabilities, the iPhone might just give them the much needed push to finally become mainstream.

Track all Recent Activity on your Gmail Account

Google has recently added a new security feature to Gmail which lets users track their recent sessions and also allows them to sign out remotely.
Technically speaking, this new layer of information will let Gmail users track all recent activity on their Gmail account which indeed is an excellent new security measure.

Previously, Gmail has been the subject of a lot criticism in terms of security because of the Incoming Mail Filter Trojan (Click here to check Gmail Incoming Mail Filters) but now with this new feature it will overthrow every other mail service in terms of good security.

Malware: The Difference Between Quarantine and Delete

Just wanted to share a nifty information I found while trying to decide whether I should quarantine or delete malwares from my computer today. Apparently, the idea of having the "quarantine" option when an antivirus detects an infected file is to avoid false positives. If by chance the antivirus software wrongly flags a file as "bad" when the file is actually something you need, like a critical program (for example Explorer.exe in Windows) such that deleting it might cause the computer to stop working, quarantine allows it to simply restore it back.
Anything in quarantine is safely segregated from the rest of your computer, it cannot run from there, so it can do no harm. So the general advice is to put the infected files in quarantine for a while you go about your normal computer activities. If everything continues to run properly after a reasonable period of time (say, about a week or two), then delete the files in quarantine permanently.

Hitwise: Yahoo Would be Just Fine Without Search

Hitwise Intelligence took an interesting look at the breakdown of Yahoo's properties today. They come to the conclusion that, even if Yahoo sells off its search division, Yahoo's other properties probably wouldn't be too affected by this, as they get most of their traffic from Google's search anyway. Only Yahoo Image Search, Games, Maps, and News get most of their traffic from Yahoo Search.
Looking at these statistics, it becomes clear that most of Yahoo's properties would continue doing just fine without getting traffic from Yahoo Search. Also, according to Hitwise, Yahoo Search only gets about 12% of Yahoo's traffic anyway, while Yahoo's homepage and Yahoo Mail get a combined 68%.

How to Send Free Unlimited Text Messages from iPhone 3G

Believe or not but the new iPhone 3G data plans by AT&T have not made customers happy so far.
Above all, now you will need to pay an extra $5 every month to get 200 text messages which usually came free with previous iPhone data plans. So below you can read a trick on how to send unlimited text messages from iPhone for free.
Here we will be making use of a famous email-to-text service called Teleflip.com

  1. Create a new email message on your iPhone.
  2. In the To: box type, 1234567890@teleflip.com (where the numbers are placeholders for any 10-digit phone number), type a message and send.
  3. Enjoy free text messaging!

The message will be sent to the number in the email and all received text messages will be sent to you as an email.
If you want to use a web app to send text messages, use TxtDrop or Durgle as they work best on iPhone Safari.
Note: This trick will work for iPhone users in US and Canada only.

Crear Paginas webs Temporales

Facesaerch - Search for Face Images and Find People

Facesaerch basically helps you find face images of people and celebrities. It is powered by the Google Face Search technology which was unveiled by Google in July last year.
The image results are highly accurate and animate in a fancy cover-flow style which you might have experienced while using a Mac or iTunes. Other than celebrities, Facesaerch works good for finding pictures of common people too.
Facesaerch also has a Facebook app called FriendlyFlow which lets you browse your Facebook friends visually and receive live updates of what they are currently doing.

YouTube Continues to Destroy All Competitors in Declining Video Market

YouTube's huge lead in market share over other online video sites continues to get bigger, even as the over all video viewing market continues a decline. According to traffic analysts Hitwise, YouTube now sees 75.43% of traffic to the online video category; that's up 26% from it's May 2007 marketshare of 59.95%. The nearest competitor is still MySpaceTV, which was down a whopping 44% to 9% marketshare.
YouTube's huge dominance over a market that includes a wide variety of different video sites, each with different communities and feature sets, probably does not bode very well for innovation in the sector. We'd love to see more people checking out innovative services like Metacafe, Blip.tv and others. We wrote about the top video content producers in the world yesterday, many of which are bigger in places other than YouTube. Smaller up and comers outside of YouTube deserve some attention, too.

China Web Boom: .CN Now More Popular than .Net

China's top-level domain has now surpassed .net as the web's third most popular top-level and second most popular country-specific domain, according to a study by VeriSign says the Associated Press. VeriSign said that registrations of .cn domains had surged 23% in the first quarter of this year, and tripled year-over-year. China's domain boom is a sign of the country's growing importance on the web and rapidly expanding Internet user base.

The VeriSign report didn't break down domain numbers, but the running total from Germany's DENIC shows that China's .cn domain has about 11.8 million active registrations -- good enough for 3rd place and 230,000 more than fourth place .net domains. Germany's .de extension is in second place, about a quarter million registrations ahead of China, and the grand daddy of all domain extensions, .com, is comfortably in first place with 76.5 million domain registrations.

Men Around the World Access the Mobile Web Almost 10X as Much as Women, Study Says

Popular mobile browser provider Opera released a demographic report about their users today that provides some valuable, if sometimes unsurprising, insights into just who is accessing the web on their mobile phones. The two primary take-aways: 88.1% of people using the mobile Web around the world are male and most people using Opera Mini are between the ages of 18-27.
Opera's study will no doubt be discussed in settings ranging from marketing to advocacy of social equity in technology. It's a good one to have in the back of your mind when thinking about the mobile web.
